چکیده

background: the different growth mechanism and biologic behavior of the odontogenic keratocyst(okc) compared to other odontogenic cysts might be related to the proliferating capacity of itsepithelium. in this study, the aim was to evaluate and compare the distribution and staining intensityof p16 and cyclin d1 in okc and unicystic ameloblastoma (ua). materials and methods: in this descriptive analytic study, hematoxylin‑ and eosin‑stained slides ofokcs and uas available from the archives of the oral pathology laboratory of the esfahan school ofdentistry were examined. twenty‑five noninflamed solitary odontogenic keratocysts and 25 unicysticameloblastomas (of either type) were selected and stained immunohistochemically. distributionand staining intensity score (sid score) for p16‑ and cyclin d1‑positive cells was calculated inboth groups. results were analyzed statistically with wilcoxon, friedman, and mann‑whitney tests; p < 0.05 was considered significant. results: the highest expression of cyclin d1‑positive cells was seen in the suprabasal layer ofkeratocysts ( p < 0.05) and in the peripheral layer of uas ( p < 0.05). likewise, the highest expression ofp16‑positive cells was observed in the basal and suprabasal layers of keratocysts ( p > 0.05) and centralportions of uas ( p > 0.05). expression of cyclin d1 was higher in uas compared to keratocyts ( p < 0.05), although p16 did not show a significant difference between the two study groups ( p > 0.05). conclusion: cyclin d1 did show a higher staining intensity in uas compared to the keratocysts, although the expression of p16 was similar in the studied groups. the invasive growth of okcmight be related to the state of expression of cyclin d1 and p16 in the epithelium of this cyst. key words: cyclin d1, keratocyst, odontogenic cysts, p16, unicystic ameloblastoma

Comparison of Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen Expression in Odontogenic Keratocyst and Ameloblastoma: An Immunohistochemical Study

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is a nuclear protein synthesized in the late G1 and S phase of the cell cycle, and immunohistochemical detection of the protein represents a useful marker for the proliferating fraction of cells in tissue specimens. PCNA expression was studied in odontogenic keratocysts (n = 15) and ameloblastomas (n = 46) using an avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex metho...

An Immunohistochemical Survey to Evaluate the Expression of CD105 and CD34 in Ameloblastoma and Odontogenic Keratocyst

UNLABELLED Statement of the Problem : Ameloblastoma is the most common odontogenic tumor which is slow-growing, locally invasive and exhibit specific biologic behavior and high recurrence rate. Likewise, odontogenic keratocyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst that has a high recurrence rate and aggressive behavior. There are limited studies considering the relationship between the angiogenes...

Unicystic Ameloblastoma as a Differential Diagnosis for Odontogenic Cysts

Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) is a variant of the solid or multicystic ameloblastoma. Radiographically, though the unilocular appearance is common, it can produce multilocular lesions also. Histologically, the minimum criterion for diagnosing a lesion as UA is the demonstration of a single cystic sac lined by ameloblastomatous epithelium often only in focal areas with or without areas of intralu...

Immunohistochemical Comparison of the Expression of CD34 and CD105 in Odontogenic Keratocyst and Dentigerous Cyst

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst with specific histopathological features, high recurrence rate, and aggressive clinical behavior. Angiogenesis might be considered as an important factor for the growth, expansion, and distribution of this lesion. PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to determine the mean vascular densities (MVD) of ...

An Immunohistochemical Study of Cyclin D1 Expression in Astrocytic Tumors and its Correlation with Tumor Grade

Background & Objective: Glioblastoma-multiforme is the high grade form of astrocytic tumors with a short survival time, which are the most common type of brain tumors. Therefore, finding new therapeutic options is essential. Cyclin D1 is expressed in some human malignancies and can be a potential target for therapeutic intervention. The aim of the present study was to determine...
